Golden Retrievers and a New Lab Puppy

I need to update this page to include our newest family member, Ketli… a chocolate Lab. I have plenty to say about her and lots of puppy photos so stay tuned.

Golden Retrievers.. pure love, loyalty and enthusiasm. This page is a work in progress. Right now Cabot is under represented. I’m working on it.. Don’t worry Cabot lovers.

Introducing our family dogs: Emma and Cabot. The fluffy smaller one is Emma and the taller, leaner one is Cabot. Cabot is named for the northernmost 4,000 footer of the New Hampshire White Mountains. I was determined to use a mountain name and decided against Washington, Jackson, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lincoln, etc…

Emma’s official name is Emmagine That. She exhibits a joy for life (I don’t know how to spell that correctly in French… here is my try.. Joie de Vie)that is especially evident when she is retrieving in water. She swam like a little beaver at age 4 months in frigid New England November weather. On the other hand, Cabot floundered around when I finally got him into the water to retrieve a stick close to shore. And those differences exist to this day.. just like we see in our human children. Cabot developed a technique to get the sticks without going into water. You guessed it. He waits on shore and grabs it from Emma when she gets to land. He is a typical smart Golden Retriever solving problems who is such fun to watch.

Emma charges in no matter what and Cabot stays on shore and waits for her to bring the sticks to land so that he can grab them to entice her to play chase or tug-of-war on land.

Did I mention that she double and triple retrieves? No training. Natural instinct. It was a shock when I first saw her do it on her own with no prompting. It is such a pleasure to see dogs in their element doing what they are genetically programmed to do.

If I am about to throw another stick she will just drop the first one for Cabot so that she can jump in for the next one, two or three.
