FORCE: Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered — Hereditary, Genetic Breast or Ovarian Cancer and BRCA Issues

April 12, 2013

My family wants to get the word out about the high risk for ovarian and breast cancer from a BRCA gene mutation. This mutation was passed down to us from our father not our mother. So look at both sides of your family tree to determine cancer risk.

Downey Sisters Updated

Who is a Cancer Previvor? I am. My sister Kate is. We did not get cancer. We inherited the BRCA mutation from our father that increased our risk for ovarian and breast cancer dramatically. (see below) Women with harmful mutations in either BRCA1 or BRCA2 have risk of breast cancer that is about five times the normal risk, and a risk of ovarian cancer that is about ten to thirty times normal.[1] Wikipedia

My other two sisters were diagnosed with cancer after finding out that all four of us had inherited the BRCA mutation. They underwent chemotherapy.

Then the four of us decided that surgery to remove our ovaries and fallopian tubes and our breasts to head off our high risk of cancer would could be life-saving.

Higher Risk of Ovarian and Breast Cancer with the BRCA mutation From Wikipedia:

Certain variations of the BRCA1 gene lead to an increased risk for breast cancer as part of a hereditary breast-ovarian cancer syndrome. Researchers have identified hundreds of mutations in the BRCA1 gene, many of which are associated with an increased risk of cancer. Women with an abnormal BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene have up to a 80% risk of developing breast cancer by age 90; increased risk of developing ovarian cancer is about 55% for women with BRCA1 mutations.

This is a link to a story about my family and the BRCA1 genetic mutation. Our story is the Downey Sisters’ story.
